The 2021 4 Day Ride has been cancelled because of Government lock down restrictions b
The Discover Jamaica By Bike promises a very fulfilling experience as we ride around the coast of Jamaica and visit some of the hidden gems, frequented by locals. We will be riding around 324 miles and climbing over 12,700 feet over these enjoyable 4 days. Thisis a bucket list item for all serious recreational cyclists
Day 1 takes us from the beautiful parish of Portland, from Port Antonio, to the well known Tourist Resort, Ocho Rios, in the parish of St. Ann. This scenic route will be 70.30 miles and 3051 feet of elevation. This segment is ranked third in terms of difficulty but the beauty of the route will make it easier
Day 3 is the most challenging. It is just around 80 miles but comes in at approximately 4500 feet of elevation and comes after two days of riding. So you will want to get a massage in Negril the evening before and relax by the pool or beach before taking on this segment. This route takes us on the South Coast and through the town of Savannah La Mar, scenic Holland Bamboo as we stop at places like Middle Quarters for some peppered shrimp and Claudette's for her world famous curry goat.
Day 4 is the easiest day, just around 62 miles, and just 1734 feet of elevation. But watch out for the head winds as we head from Mandeville to Kingston. We will make this final day much easier as we stop for Jerk Chicken and Pork and make a stop at the Coconut vendor to refresh ourselves before heading into New Kingston where we will close out the 4 day tour.
Quite a few persons have contacted u to say that they want to ride the full 4 days. The challenge they have is that they don't think that they are fit enough to do so, even though they recognize that this is a CYCLING BUCKET LIST item.
With the next 4 DAY ULTIMATE RIDE being April 15 - 18, 2022, it provides a lot of time to prepare for the event. Even if you have not started to ride as yet. There is a lot of time to prepare for a successful completion of the 4 day ride in 2022.
The following is how you prepare for the event:
1. First ensure that you have the appropriate bicycle. To complete the full 4 days, the fastest bike to do it on is a road bike, But there are some people strong enough to use a commuter or mountain bike.
2. Start riding. You may want to ride alone but it is always best to join a group of persons (best to join a club). Whichever you prefer, it is important to ride as much as you can
3. Have specific goals and practice. So the 4 day ride is 324 miles and 12,700 feet of elevation, over the 4 days. It therefore means that you cannot do 20 mile flat rides, for example, and try to successfully complete it. So design a training plan to build up to it. First get used to riding distances of 80 to 100 miles and then drop in some hills as you get better. If you join a club or have a group that wants to take on a similar challenge then that is best. Don't discount indoor training, such as on Zwift, as they work also.
4. Be consistent and speak to someone who has done a similar ride before. You can speak with us at DJBB about anything you would like to know. For example if you are in Jamaica we can provide information on bicycle blubs and if you are not then we can seek to get information from our network.
If you can't do the full 4 days, either one of the legs are still a great challenge to complete and you will still be able to say you accomplished a lot and had a great time.
Most importantly just come and have fun as you challenge yourself to complete this epic ride, in a beautiful country, with great climate and the local food and accommodation experience.
